Before you ride a used motorcycle off the lot, it’s important to take a moment and try to gauge the overall condition of a used model. However, if you’re not very familiar with motorcycle parts and components, it’s easy to miss important red flags that warn of neglect or misuse from previous owners. For tips on how to correctly inspect a used motorcycle, and what to watch out for, be sure to read our tips below.

The Body

While small dings and scratches may not seem like a big deal at first glance, they may be signs that a used motorcycle hasn’t been well-cared for by a previous owner. If you notice quite a few imperfections on your motorcycle’s body—whether it’s chipped paint or torn seating— you’ll want to take your time thoroughly examining the bike. Watch out for damaged fenders or rims, signs of rust on chrome and steel features, and balding or unevenly worn tires.

The Engine

The best way to check the current state of a used motorcycle’s engine is to inspect its various fluids. To start, sniff the gas tank and shine a light inside to make sure the fluid is free of debris and doesn't have a suspicious smell to it. Next, pull the dipstick and check the color and viscosity of the engine oil. Wipe the dipstick on your hand to make sure there are no signs of metal shavings in the oil, as this is a sign the motorcycle’s engine may be on its last leg. Finally, take a quick look at the transmission and brake fluids. There should be clear, light in color, and show no signs of debris or condensation.

In order to get an accurate measure of your used motorcycle’s condition, you’ll want to set up a test drive to see how well the model rides.
